Wilton's Music Hall Recce
26 Mar 2015
With my third live show as conductor and musical director for Chozen Official coming up at the beautiful historical Wilton's Music Hall on April 24th 2015, we went on a recce to see how we could best make the space work for us.

We'll probably be taking advantage of the stage having two levels. Instead of the previous shows, where we had everyone (8 strings, piano, guitars, Chozen, guest vocalists and me) on a narrow but wide stage, we're going to go deep this time, with strings and other musicians behind the vocalists.

In case you're wondering, we won't be using the piano in the pictures (it would be tricky to mic up properly anyway in this context) - it's on a temporary loan to the venue and we'll be clearing out to make space for our setup.

See the red curtains? We're going to use projections (as in our first show at the Tabernacle in Notting Hill) to light up the backdrop behind the chamber orchestra. As I'm of the fairly tall persuasion chances are that on the night there might also be the odd shadow of a lanky fellow waving his arms about!

Wilton's has a long history dating back to its origins as an Ale House in 1743. It's been used for live music since 1843 and is an integral part of the East End's cultural history. One of my ancestors, Louis Leoni Lee, was a music publisher in the middle of the 19th century and his family lived locally in Whitechapel for some time. I can't help wondering that he would have frequented or even been involved with Wilton's when it started as a venue!
