My 2 cents on writing music and everything that goes on around it.

Autumn "Walk to Work" 18 Oct 2013 Speaking to a graphic designer at a wedding recently about working from home gave me the idea of a doing a regular "walk to work" and "walk back home from work" - essentially a walk round the block, or several blocks if you're feeling adventurous (or have letters to post). As everyone who's got a studio or office in the same building as their bedroom knows, it can be all too easy to blur the boundaries between productive time and personal time, with personal time being the first to go out of the window.

Technicolor leaves covering a brick wall
It's a great time of year to start this new routine, as the colours on plants are changing constantly. I've really started to notice the differences between the trees and shrubs (or hedges) that are already losing their leaves, the ones that are still green, the ones that have gone yellow but still look vibrant, and the ones that are turning red and glowing in the low sun of an English October morning.

Clearly left is north (nearest airport is north of here)
There are also amazing textures in the sky. Somehow the (not-so) low-cost airlines planes criss-crossing the London night sky leave beautiful traces of condensation, like ants leaving divergent sticky trails on leaves.

Tree, house, cable and sky near my house
This image is my favourite from today's walk - the straight lines of the telephone cables which, archaically, are still above ground, the red and orange hues of the tree below, and the clouds and condensation trails in the deep blue morning sky forming three layers: man-made (cables); natural but a result of human intervention (planting of trees); and a mixture of natural and man-made (skyscape). Lovely.
