My 2 cents on writing music and everything that goes on around it.

Musician's Union Working Musicians report 7 Nov 2013 Yesterday I came across the Musician's Union's report on working musicians that was commissioned last year. It's revealing reading, whether you're a musician or not yourself.

Some figures that made me stop and think:
60% of musicians have worked for free in the last 12 months
34% of musicians have a job outside of music that they earn part of their income from

Gross annual income of musicians (Source: Musician's Union 2012)

The killer is this one though:
56% of musicians earn less than £20.000 (the national average salary)

For self-employed musicians, old age is a massive issue. It turns out that 65% of musicians don't pay into a pension. These are all people who will be faced with old age poverty or working till they can't work anymore.

Something to think about for people who choose to consume and advocate the availability of "free" music. Their free can only come at a great cost to other people's livelihoods.
