My 2 cents on writing music and everything that goes on around it.

CHOZEN Rehearsals 18 Feb 2014 Rehearsals for the live show I arranged for strings and piano have now started at Ritz studios in Putney. An 8-piece string section, a piano, electronic drumkit, bass and guitar are breathing a wholly new life into the set. The string players have worked with Adele, Pulp, Damon Albarn and others.

My job is to make sure the arrangements I wrote work perfectly with the band and the vocalists for the live show at the Tabernacle in April. Although I won't be conducting on the night, in rehearsals I beat time and call the section entries, as well as working with the rhythm section to keep the balance between electric and acoustic a pleasant and harmonious one.

One of the difficulties in bringing electronic music into a live context with so many players is the need to synchronize with pre-existing beats, sound effects and vocal samples. Producer Roy Merchant and drummer Pete spent a fair amount of effort preparing the right entries and exits for the backing tracks.

Triggering backing tracks at the right points is a crucial task

In the end we got there and ran through a full set once in real time, leaving everyone to go home elated (and very exhausted).
